Epic Games
Product Design, User Experience, Design System
Esports tournament platform for Rocket League Championship Series.
Rocket League is a 'high-powered hybrid of arcade-style soccer and vehicular mayhem' where you shoot goals from behind the wheel of RC cars. As gamemaker Psyonix expanded their Esports reach, they started running into issues with their existing tools - their functional requirements were too bespoke for the mass-market tools to accommodate.
We helped re-imagine their software into a platform that addressed the specific needs of Rocket League's admins, players and fans; while also ensuring that the platform is forward-compatible so other publishers under Epic can leverage the tool in the future.

We began discovery by diving deep into the existing world of esports, specifically related to hosting tournaments. There are a couple key players that offer good white-label options, but this is Epic Games and we wanted something special. This sentiment was amplified after our interviews with company staff, team managers, and top-ranked players – and it became clear that we needed a single source-of-truth, with up-to-date information, verified directly by the tournament committee.
Our strategy was to design from the perspective of internal and external customers, concurrently. So we split the work into Administrator and Player experiences, with persistent check-ins to align the creative and overlap thinking. This resulted in a unified experience that effectively guides the natural transition from fan to player/manager, through a learn-by-doing method.

The result is a custom tournament platform and design style, with the ability to flexibly scale across other game titles.
We estimate the number of admins required to run a tournament will be reduced by 75% based on results from the private tournaments; saving money and reducing coordination, training, and onboarding time for admins. The website is also expected to grow the player and fanbase by making esport news and information more accessible and simplifying the team creation and tournament participation process.
